Everyone who knew her had got used to the feeling that she would be there forever, but finally she came to the end of her very long life on Friday 26 January. She was 106 years old! As you will see from the above photos she retained her bright personality and her interest in what was going on around her till the end. The top two photos were taken by Gendy just a short time before Peg died. The birthday one was on her 106th birthday, July 9 2023. Peg spent the last few months of her life with her daughter Gendy and son-in-law Tom who took exceptional care of her, with other family members helping out as well.

At the Marlborough Museum there is a small exhibition representative of Peg's work over the years. This will be displayed for a few weeks to honour Peg, the first Marlborough Cultural Treasure.

Rest in Peace Peg 1917 -- 2024

Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17675662219353135511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1225616901792189197.post-16370419465509662782021-10-26T10:26:00.000+13:002021-10-26T10:26:48.341+13:00Taking a BreakMarlborough Weavers are not taking a break - they are as busy as ever with new weavers and lots of enthusiasm. But technology has moved on and those of our members who have moved with it are more likely to view our facebook page than check out this blog. Both platforms have been established (at different times) by enthusiastic members but I seem to be the "caretaker" of both of them for now. I have decided to post photos and messages to only one page rather than duplicate my efforts and, as more of our members are familiar with facebook, and some even prepared to post photos, I will use that from now on. The blog will remain live and who knows what use we may make of it in the future. In the meantime, please keep your eye on Marlborough Weavers on facebook.

The CCW library is sorted in weave types rather than end uses but Librarian Elaine happily sorted through and found all sorts of possibilities from the various sections and sent us a whole big bundle. I am always impressed with how useful this resource is . . . and it costs only the return postage.

As well, some people brought along remnants and offcuts of fabric that has been used for interior decor . . . curtains, cushions, seat covers, wall fabric and a few "whatevers". Lots of possibilities and lots of discussion.

Not many show and tell items this month but the ones that were there were all interesting:

These cheerful kitchen cloths would brighten anyone's day. It's good to know that weaving is alive and well in Marlborough. It's also great to see so many new weavers, getting active and producing work using their own ideas. Good work everyone and don't be afraid to ask for help or advice if you need it.

This month we spent some time studying waffle weave, again making use of the Cross Country Weavers' library samples. Until now its use has been restricted because it sheds the wool fibres too easily. The question was how to stablise it without felting it and losing the surface texture. For some it was lock-down, for others it was more like time-in. We were unable to meet because of the Covid19 pandemic, but it didn't stop us weaving. Communication was by way of group email with photos posted on the topic of baby blankets. Here are some of the pics retrieved from the emails, in no particular order. Apologies to those I've missed.

The first six photos are of baby blankets, some showing the dimpled effect of differential shrinkage. Whether by design or accident, it can add a design feature,
Anne had sent for Cross Country Weavers' samples which arrived in abundance. There was a great selection to show how versatile this technique is. Chris and Joan had each set up a table loom in S&W so everyone could have a try to see how it works. Betty had already been experimenting on her loom and had done several variations on her sample warp.
This topic was in preparation for a Summer and Winter workshop some of our members were planning to attend following the Education Event in Nelson in May. Unfortunately the coronovirus problems besetting the country (in fact the whole world) have caused the cancellation of this event along with many others. All is not lost though . . . there is plenty of time to study and practice so that our members will be ahead of the game when it eventually gets rescheduled.
Other members are working on their entries.

What's on the Bobbin Cottage loom? This time it is warped up ready for weaving with either rags or roving. This is a new concept for our newer weavers but is back where a number of us started. Here is Joan showing a fleece rug that must be over forty years old. These things just don't wear out . . . but it is nice to replace them every now and then. On the loom is a more colourful version but the technique is the same. It is hoped lots of people will "have a go."
After we all admired the colours and the handle, the inevitable question arose . . . could we weave that pattern? How many shafts would it need?

Out came the pen and the back of a grocery docket to make a rough sketch of the weave . . . and yes, with eight shafts we could do this. A tidy version of the draft was later produced on the computer.

(January's photos are on our facebook page.) An amazing thirteen people attended the meeting and there are still others who were not able to be there - so what a growth spurt we are having. And yet another loom has come out of the woodwork looking for a new owner. It's a very tidy 4-shaft, 6 pedal Ashford jack loom. It's a bit noisy but we have people working on that. There is a perfectly woven cushion length on it so we know it performs well.

Photos this month will come in instalments, the first covering the topic of the month which was tea towels. Members brought lots - many that have been in use for years, others just hot off the loom. No two were alike either in size, colour or pattern. There was plenty to spark off inspiration, and many questions were asked, which was pertinent because we intend to launch into a group tea towel project this year. Some things most of us agreed on: towels need to be a generous size, and a mix of cotton and linen seems to be the best for drying dishes. One thing was questioned . . . why do we always think that mercerised cotton is not so good for tea towels? Have we ever tried it? There were anecdotes about use of mercerised cotton being just fine, so let's look into that and find out if it is just a myth.

Not so happy at the moment as the very long blog post about our first meeting of the year has disappeared into hiding and refuses to come out. A fitting end to a great year

Our last meeting for 2019 ended with a wonderful surprise for everyone. Chris had squirreled away many table mats and runners woven by our late friend and colleague June McKenzie. We were all given a gift parcel containing a piece of June's weaving. This will not only be a reminder of June but also a reminder for us to aim for good design, excellent workmanship and perfect finishing, all hallmarks of June's work.

Unfinished business.I was about to post some pictures from our November meeting when I discovered that I hadn't put up the last of the October ones. Apologies for that. Here they are now. I will not put names to them in case my memory is faulty. Hopefully I will remember to post the November photos in a few days.
Welcome Judy, we will enjoy sharing our experiences.

Show and tell photos have just gone up on the weavers' facebook page so will leave putting them up here for a while and show you what the group looks like instead. Even this is not a "full house" as one or two other members could not attend.

A highlight, especially for those who were weaving in the 1970s and 80s, was a "find" for one of our Creative Fibre friends. It was a beautifully woven and tailored lightweight coat in wool and mohair, lined with gorgeous silk, found in an Op Shop - still looking glamorous and very wearable.
