June Meeting

There's nothing to show from the June meeting as the camera didn't even come out. However, that doesn't mean there was nothing happening. As winter has started we met in the daytime and it was good to have a good number present even though several members are away travelling. They will have some catching up to do when they return. We started on the collapse weave workshop which had been prepared by Anne Field.  Fine threads and even finer threads were already made into warps and all we had to do was beam them on to the looms. Sounds easy. It wasn't! It took a lot of care and a lot longer than we expected. At the end of the day five looms were taken home in various states of threading and the notes distributed for perusal before the next stage. Happy studying everyone.

One person has produced something to show recently. Peg has made a hanging to present to her old school, Rangi Ruru, on the occasion of its 125th anniversary. The presentation coincided with the opening of a new building, Mana Wahine, (strong women) and here is a photo of Peg with the School Principal, Julie Moor beside the hanging. The heading is woven on the loom with merino wool and the strands are of silk sliver, bound with fine ribbon. Peg says the many strands represent the many opportunities open for the Rangi girls to explore in their future lives.  Peg will celebrate her 97th birthday on 9 July.

Exhibition at Fibre Spectrum, Nelson

For the month of January four Top of the South members of the Professional Weavers' Network are  having a small exhibition called Simply Weaving in Fibre Spectrum, Trafalgar Street, Nelson. Rose and Peg are joining with Sue Broad from Nelson and Jane Clark from Mapua  to show our work and do a little bit to raise awareness of PWN.

 Here are two of Peg's damask pieces

 and two which include Japanese paper, alongside  a hanging of Sue's woven with reflective threads.

And the wrap and scarf are Sue's also.  Obscured above is a stunning deflected double weave scarf of Sue's.

Although the exhibition is listed for the whole of January, as items are sold they may be taken away so if you want to see it I suggest you do so sooner rather than later.

Peg just keeps on weaving . . .

 Autumn is here and Peg wastes no time getting into the autumn tones.

 She loves to show off the beautiful colours of the recycled sari silk.

But it is her damask weaving that 'sings'.

Even when she's not weaving she keeps her fingers busy. This is a stuffed knitted tube, coiled, mounted and sold!

New Work from Peg Moorhouse

Peg's latest hangings are based on linen that is the colour of the Queen Charlotte Sound outside her window on a brilliant day.  The embellishment on this one gives it a carnival atmosphere.

And here it is good to see a focus on the damask structure that is Peg's trademark.
